The Ontario Power Authority (OPA)

The Ontario Power Authority (OPA) plays a critical part in ensuring an adequate, long-term supply of electricity in Ontario.  They are cutting edge in the development of cost-effective and sustainable electricity systems, as well as in the planning and procuring of electricity supplies from diverse resources.

The OPA has developed the Feed-In Tariff Program (FIT) whereby consumers can play an active role in reducing green-house gas emissions as well as being compensated for their efforts!

If you are a homeowner, farmer or small business owner, you have the opportunity to develop a small or "micro” renewable electricity generation project (10 kilowatts or less) on your property.  Under the microFIT Program, you will be paid a guaranteed price over a 20-year term for all the electricity you produce and deliver to the province’s electrical grid.  You will be paid for the power you produce, allowing you to earn a reasonable rate of return on your investment over the term of your contract.  Presently, most local distribution companies (LDC) charge you about 5.2 cents per kilowatt hour.  By installing solar panels, and under the microFIT Program, your LDC will pay you a guaranteed rate of 80.2 cents per kilowatt hour, bound by a 20-year contract.

The FIT Program is designed for larger projects.  Homeowners, farmers and small business owners who have more roof space are capable of producing more than 10 kilowatts on their property with the installation of a grid-tied solar energy system.

Under the FIT Program, you will be paid a guaranteed price over a 20-year term for all the electricity you produce and deliver to the province’s electrical grid.  By installing roof mounted solar panels, and under the FIT Program, your LDC will pay you guaranteed rate of 71.3 cents per kilowatt hour, bound by a 20 year contract.

You will be a part of the largest climate change initiative in North America … right here in Ontario!!

The Benefits to You

Under the microFIT Program, you will be paid a guaranteed price over a 20-year term for all the electricity you produce and deliver to the province’s electrical grid.  You will be paid for the power you produce with prices that are designed to cover the costs of a typical project (purchase, installation, connection, operating and maintenance).  The microFIT Program will allow you to earn a reasonable rate of return on your investment over the term of your contract.  Presently, most local distribution companies (LDC) charge you about 5.2 cents per kilowatt hour.  By installing solar panels, and under the microFIT Program, your LDC will pay you guaranteed rate of 80.2 cents per kilowatt hour, bound by a 20 year contract.  You will be contributing to a healthier environment by generating electricity from renewable resources ... solar photovoltaic (PV) panels ... and helping to replace coal-fired generation across the province, reducing greenhouse gases and other pollutants.  You will also be a part of the largest climate change initiative in North America ... right here in Ontario!  As demand rises for “green” technologies, more Ontarians will be needed to design, build, install, operate and maintain these technologies, thereby creating new local businesses and “green” jobs!

"We are like tenant farmers chopping down the fence around our house for fuel when we should be using Nature's inexhaustible sources of energy - sun, wind and tide . . . I'd put my money on solar energy.  What a source of power!

I hope we don't have to wait until oil and coal run out before we tackle that."
